A HEART AS TRUE AS THE SEAChapter 1 of 7
CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL FROM THE SHORE
A HEART AS TRUE AS THE SEA

A thousand years passed. Aethelgard became a legend, a whisper in the waves, a story told by old sailors to frighten children. No one believed it was real anymore.
In a small fishing village called Haven’s Reach, lived a girl named Elara. She was a quiet girl, with eyes the color of sea glass and a love for the ocean that ran deep in her bones. She spent her days on the shore, collecting shells and watching the waves. Her father was a fisherman, and her mother had died when Elara was a baby. She didn’t have many friends. The other children thought she was strange because she would stare at the ocean for hours, as if listening to something they could not hear.
“Come away from the water, Elara,” her father would call. “It’s time to mend the nets.”
But Elara couldn’t stay away. She felt a connection to the sea, a pull in her chest that she could not explain. Sometimes, when she stood at the water’s edge, she would hear a faint, sad whisper on the wind.
“Lost... forgotten... broken…”
She would ask her father, “Do you hear that?”
He would shake his head, a worried look on his face. “It’s just the wind, child.”
One afternoon, a grand ship sailed into the small harbor of Haven’s Reach. It was a ship unlike any Elara had ever seen. It was sleek and black, with sails of deep crimson. It looked like a dark, beautiful predator. This was the ship of the ruling family, the Ashfords. They were the richest family in all the land, with a palace on the cliffs and a story of great fortune.
Elara watched from the shore as the ship’s crew lowered a small boat. In it was a young man. He was tall and proud, with eyes as dark as coal and an air of importance that made the villagers bow their heads. This was Prince Caelan Ashford.
His eyes scanned the village, looking bored. Then his gaze landed on Elara. For a moment, their eyes met. Elara felt a strange shiver run down her spine. He was handsome, but there was something familiar about him. Something ancient and cold in his eyes.
Prince Caelan and his party were staying in the village for a few days. He was on a hunt, it was said. A hunt for a rare sea creature.
Elara tried to stay away, but the village was small, and they kept crossing paths. One day, he saw her holding a beautiful, perfectly white shell.
“That’s a lovely shell,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. “I’ve never seen one like it. Where did you find it?”
Elara felt a strange heat rush to her face. She pointed to a rocky cove down the beach. “In the Tidepool Cove,” she said quietly. “You have to go at low tide.”
“Show me,” he commanded, but his tone was not mean. It was curious.
Against her better judgment, Elara led him to the cove. For the first time, she saw a flicker of something else in his dark eyes. It wasn’t just cold curiosity. It was a spark. He looked at her, really looked at her, and for a moment, he seemed like a different person.
“You’re different from the other villagers,” he said, his voice softer. “You look at the sea like it’s a friend.”
“It is,” Elara said. “It’s the only friend I have.”
He didn’t laugh. He just nodded, as if he understood.
That was the beginning. He stayed in Haven’s Reach for many weeks. He was supposed to be hunting, but he kept finding excuses to see Elara. He called her by her name, and it sounded like music. He would bring her little gifts from the ship—a ribbon for her hair, a piece of sea glass from a faraway land.
And just like Lyra a thousand years ago, Elara’s lonely heart began to open. He was handsome. He was powerful. And he seemed to care for her, a simple fisherman’s daughter.
He told her stories of his palace, of balls and fancy dresses. He told her she was beautiful, that she was a treasure hidden on a forgotten shore. He promised her a life of wonder and happiness.
Elara was falling in love. It felt like the most beautiful dream.
But her father was worried. “Be careful, Elara,” he said. “Men like that have secrets. They take what they want and leave nothing but sorrow behind.”
Elara didn’t listen. She was sure Caelan was different. He felt different. She felt a deep connection to him, as if they had known each other in another life.
