CHAPTER 15: THE PERSON WE TRUSTED
THE BILLIONAIRE THAT HATED LOVE (20+)

Ava stood frozen.
The phone was still against her ear.
But she already knew.
She knew from Damienโ€™s voice.
The same man who never sounded uncertain.
The same man who always had control.
Was now speaking like someone who had just discovered his entire world was built on a lie.
"Damien..."
Her voice softened.
"Tell me."
Silence.
Then:
"Charles Carter."
Ava's eyes widened.
Behind her, Daniel went completely still.
She noticed.
"You know him."
It wasn't a question.
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Ava's heart sank.
Everyone knew him.
Damien's father's closest advisor.
The man who helped Damien take over the company after his father's death.
The man who stood beside the Laurent family for decades.
The man everyone trusted.
"He was behind it?"
Damien's voice came through the phone.
"I don't know everything yet."
Ava heard anger in his voice.
"But I know enough."
Three hours earlier...
Damien had returned to the Laurent estate.
He needed answers.
Not from documents.
Not from hidden rooms.
From someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had been there.
Charles Carter.
The man who had guided him since he was young.
The man who had told him how to run a company.
How to survive.
How to trust nobody.
And now Damien finally understood.
Maybe those lessons weren't advice.
Maybe they were preparing.
Charles sat calmly across from Damien.
Almost too calmly.
"You found out."
It wasn't a question.
Damien stared at him.
"How long?"
Charles didn't pretend.
"How long is it?"
"How long have you known?"
A pause.
"Everything."
The answer hit harder than Damien expected.
"You watched me spend years searching for Julian."
Charles looked down.
"I did."
"You watched me believe he abandoned me."
"I did."
"You watched Ava's family suffer."
Another pause.
"I did."
Damien stood.
The anger inside him was almost impossible to control.
"Why?"
Charles looked up.
And for the first time...
He didn't look like an enemy.
He looked tired.
"Because I was trying to save you."
Damien laughed.
A cold laugh.
"Everyone says that."
Charles stayed quiet.
"Everyone hurts you and then says it was for your own good."
The room became silent.
Because that sentence wasn't just about Charles.
It was about his whole life.
"Your father made a mistake."
Charles finally said.
Damien stared.
"What?"
"He believed power could protect people."
Charles looked toward the window.
"He believed money could control every outcome."
"And?"
"He was wrong."
Damien's jaw tightened.
"So you destroyed everything?"
"No."
Charles shook his head.
"I prevented something worse."
"What could possibly be worse?"
Charles looked at him.
"The truth."
A pause.
"The truth about why your families were connected."
Damien stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
Charles hesitated.
And that hesitation confirmed something.
There was still more.
"There is a reason your father chose Ava's family."
"Why?"
Charles looked at him.
"Because her mother was the only person who knew the truth."
Damien froze.
"About what?"
Charles lowered his voice.
"About the person who actually owns Laurent Industries."
Silence.
Again.
The same mystery.
The same impossible statement.
Damien's eyes hardened.
"Who?"
Charles didn't answer.
Because before he could...
The sound of breaking glass came from outside.
Everyone turned.
A window shattered.
Security alarms began screaming.
Charles stood immediately.
"They found us."
Damien looked at him.
"Who?"
Charles looked terrified.
"The people who have been waiting."
Back at Ava's apartment...
Daniel looked at her.
"You need to leave."
Ava frowned.
"What?"
"They know you're involved now."
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Everyone who wanted this secret buried."
Ava grabbed her bag.
"No."
Daniel looked surprised.
"No?"
"I'm done running."
She looked at the agreement in her hand.
"My whole life people have been making decisions for me."
A pause.
"My father."
"The Laurents."
"Everyone."
She picked up the document.
"But nobody gets to decide what happens next."
For the first time...
Daniel saw something.
Not the little girl he had tried to protect.
A woman.
Strong enough to face the truth.
Then her phone rang again.
Damien.
She answered.
"Where are you?"
His voice was urgent.
"Ava, listen to me."
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then:
"Charles wasn't working alone."
Ava froze.
"What?"
Damien's voice lowered.
"The person controlling everything..."
Another pause.
"Is someone even closer than Charles?"
The room became silent.
"Who?"
Damien answered.
And the name he said...
Destroyed the last piece of trust they had left.
