Gloria had been taken by surprise by the claim of her boyfriend that it had been decided at the highest level of the Presidency that the Vice-President should be assassinated to ensure she does not embarrass the Presidency. She nearly screamed out of shock when her boyfriend further said she was the right person to assassinate the Vice-President.
“Me? Why me, I cannot do it. No! No!” she had said as she began to tremble all over. The Deputy National Security Coordinator calmed her down.
“You are not going to be asked to shoot her or stab her. No. That is not it. All you have to do is to rub some stuff on the handle of one of her drawers. We chose you because you have access to her office in her absence since you are the one who cleans her office. Remember, you will be doing it for the President, for the state and for the good people of this country,” he had told her. Moreover, you would be doing it for me because the President will see me, as somebody who is competent, having executed the task he has entrusted to me. Moreover, you are to receive $ 3 million after you do it. $ 3 million, do you know how much that is in cedis? GH¢ 16.5 million, that is 165 billion old Ghana cedis! With that kind of money, you and I would be rich forever. Our children and their children would not have to suffer like the way you have suffered, dropping out of school and not having enough to eat when you were a child. Think of it before the President changes his mind and gives the job and the money to another person”
Rex Yamoah worked on Gloria slowly as the days rolled by while recruiting others through his henchman, Kruger. The others were for Plan B if Gloria failed and Plan C in case Plan B too fails. He was determined to assassinate the Vice-President at all cost.
He had given $10, 000 to Gloria a few days after breaking the news to her, lying that it was from the President. She was surprised. $10,000 was a lot of money. However, agreeing to assassinate the Vice-President was the most difficult decision of her life. Gertrude Mensah had been very good to her. She had gotten her employed and ensured her salary was twice what other cleaners receive. He had showered her with gifts and even bought a car for her. She had travelled with her to many countries. Everyone working at the Presidency said she was the Vice President’s pet. How was she to assassinate such a person?
For nights, she could not sleep. She kept tossing up in bed. Rex Yamoah kept the pressure on her, assuring her it would end well for her. Gradually, he managed to convince her, especially with the promise that they would fly to Paris, get married within six months after she carried out the task. Thoughts of getting married to him overwhelmed her. Unknown to Gloria, Rex Yamoah did not intend to keep her after she had carried out the task; dead persons do not talk- he will kill her and make sure nobody sees her body.
Therefore, now, they all gathered in a room for final instructions. The poisonous substance Gloria was to rub on the handle of the Vice President’s drawers was going to be in her possession. This was her third time meeting the others.
They were five in the room. She had met the other three men, Kruger, Tiger and Sphinx the two previous occasions they met in the very room they were meeting that night. Rex Yamoah, at the first meeting, had introduced Kruger, Sphinx and Tiger to her as National Security operatives. Of course, this was a lie. It was to deceive her into believing the lie that the President had ordered the assassination and National Security to execute the job. In addition, she was unaware that there were others involved but she had never met them; Rex had decided it was not important for them to be part of the meetings.
