CHAPTER 25
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

Vice-President Gertrude knew in spite of her warnings, the bodyguards would follow her so when she drove out of the house, she stepped hard on the accelerator, sending the car surging forward at top speed. When the guards sped out of the house, they found to their dismay that there was no sight of the Vice President’s vehicle. They could not tell the direction in which she had gone nor where she was going.
Six minutes later, she pulled up at the gate of the Presidency. The guards on duty recognized her car and opened the gates. She drove in and sped to the part of the building that housed her office and that of the President. As soon as she brought the car to a stop, she got out and dashed to the main entrance. The guard on duty saluted her. She passed by him and made for the lift. Soon, she was in and heading for the fourth floor.
Gloria, in the meantime, was on her knees pleading with Lt. Clottey to let her go before the Vice-President arrived. However, the soldier ignored her and kept watch over in the washroom, awaiting the arrival of the Vice-President.
Finally, there was a knock on the door. The Vice-President had arrived. Lt. Clottey, who now had a wet handkerchief covering his nose, ordered Gloria to cover hers with the wet handkerchief she had been using earlier. Then with his gun pointing at her, marched her out of the washroom to the main office and to the door. He turned the key in the lock and opened it. Gloria, in tears, stepped out, Lt. Clottey followed, quickly putting the pistol he had been wielding out of sight. Then he removed the handkerchief from his face and ordered Gloria to do the same. Vice-President Gertrude Mensah stared at Gloria in surprise. The cleaner immediately went down on her knees and began to plead with her for forgiveness.
“Aow! Madam! Madam forgive me ooo forgive me!” she cried out. The Vice-President snapped at her.
“Gloria, don’t touch me. Do not come close to me. In addition, if you know what is good for you, you will start talking. It is true that in life, everyone has his or her Brutus. Never on earth would I have suspected that you are the one to poison me to death. Moreover, here you are, caught while carrying out your instructions! Gloria! So you were trying to kill me, eh?” the Vice-President said, shaking her head in wonder.
“Talk now!” Lt. Clottey ordered again. After a few seconds, Gloria pulled herself together, though she was still trembling and began to tell about the plot to assassinate the Vice-President and the names of those behind it in the hope that the Vice President would forgive her. She named the Deputy National Coordinator, Rex Yamoah as the leader of the gang.
“You mean Rex Yamoah, the Deputy National Security Coordinator?” the Vice-president asked. Gloria nodded. The Vice-President shook her head in utter disbelief. When Lt. Clottey first hinted to her about the plot, her first inclination was to report the matter to the Deputy National Security Coordinator who she considered a friend. She realized if she had not taken the advice of Lt. Clottey and had done just that, she would have committed the gravest mistake of her life. She would have played into the hands of her killers.
