CHAPTER 29
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

Kruger, ignoring the reactions to his statement, explained all that had taken place. Then connecting his watch to the television in the room, soon got showing on it what transpired between him and Gloria before he killed her. The rest of the gang members in the room stared quietly at the drama that unfolded between Kruger and Gloria as it was showing on the screen. They listened with rapt attention as Gloria explained to Kruger how the operation went bad and the questions she was subjected to after she was caught. The entire group listened in silence. When the question and answer section between Kruger and Gloria ended on the screen, there was still total silence in the room. Then the Deputy National Security Coordinator spoke.
“It is sad she is dead but Kruger, you acted right. To let her live is to jeopardize our collective safety. She had to be permanently shut up before she revealed our identities,” he said.
Kruger said as far as he was concerned, what was worrying was the fact that the Vice-President knew of the plot to assassinate her.
“What is more, she is not the only one who knows. As we heard from Gloria, a soldier of the rank of Lieutenant is also aware of the plot. He was the one who caught her and called the Vice-President. Either we abandon the project or we find the soldier quickly and kill him while activating Plan B. We must execute Plan B immediately. The Vice-President is aware she is targeted for assassination; we do not know who she might tell if we do not act now. Indications are that she is keeping it between her and that lieutenant for now because she does not know those involved in the plot. I am sure she suspects people in very senior places in government are involved and since she does not know them, she does not want to go telling anybody lest she ends up telling the very people who wanted to eliminate her” Kruger said.
“Good analysis, Kruger. So, now, take your boys, search for this lieutenant and quickly eliminate him and any other who is aware of the plot. I will take care of the Vice-President. I am activating Plan B. Between now and tomorrow evening, the Vice-President will be a dead person, I assure you,” Rex Yamoah said. There was a murmur of agreement around the table.
While the rest in the room looked on, the Deputy National Security Coordinator picked his phone and called someone he referred to as Rhino who obviously works at the Presidency. The security capo asked him to find out if the Vice-President was at the office very early that morning and who was with her. Five minutes later, Rhino called back and provided the Security Coordinator with the answers. Rex Yamoah thanked Rhino and turned to Kruger.
“I called my contact at the Presidency. He confirmed that a soldier from Military Intelligence was with the Vice-President at the Presidency this morning. The man’s name is Lieutenant Victor Clottey,” he announced.
“Do we know where he lives?” Kruger asked.
“Yes. My contact made some checks. This Lt. Clottey lives at Number 2, Oyster Lane, East Legon,” the Deputy Security Capo said. Kruger nodded with satisfaction.
“Tiger, Sphinx, we have a job to do. No time to waste,” Kruger told his two henchmen. They got up, ready to leave but the Deputy Security Capo told them to wait. A few minutes later, he printed a picture from his printer and gave it to Kruger.
“That is Lt. Clottey. If you had left without having his picture, how would you have identified him?” he asked, chastising Kruger. Kruger smiled, thanked him and left with his two cronies.
Despite the fact that he had openly backed Kruger for killing Gloria, the Security capo was not happy with his Number 2. As far as he was concerned, Kruger should have called him and sought his permission before killing Gloria, who, after all, was his girl. He noted it down; he would deal with Kruger when all this was over for killing Gloria without his permission.
