The Ashford Palace was everything Caelan had promised. It was a castle of white stone on the edge of a high cliff, looking out over the endless sea. Elara had never seen anything so grand. There were servants, enormous rooms, and the biggest bed she had ever seen.
But something was wrong. The moment she entered the palace, the whispering started.
At first, it was just a feeling. A chill on the back of her neck. Then, she heard it, a faint, sad voice in the wind that blew through the open windows.
“Broken… lost… stolen…”
It was the same whisper she had heard on the shore of Haven’s Reach. But it was much, much clearer here.
Caelan was kind to her. He gave her beautiful dresses and jewels. He walked with her in the gardens, telling her of his plans for their future. But he was always busy. Always talking to his advisors. And every time Elara mentioned the whispering, he would get a strange look in his eyes.
“It’s just the wind, my love,” he would say, but his voice was strained. “The palace is old. It creaks and groans.”
Elara didn’t believe him. The voice was calling to her. It was coming from the sea below the cliffs. She would go to the edge of the cliff and stare down at the churning water.
“You must come to me, child. You must see what lies beneath…”
One day, she found a hidden path. A steep, winding staircase carved into the side of the cliff, leading down to a secret cave. The mouth of the cave was hidden by rocks, and it was only accessible at low tide.
Elara, driven by a force she didn’t understand, started to explore it. She would slip away from the palace when no one was looking and go down to the secret cave.
The cave was filled with the most incredible things. Beautiful shells, glowing crystals, and old, weathered carvings on the walls. The carvings told a story. They showed a beautiful city of crystal under the sea, a woman with eyes like the sea, and a man with eyes like coal, stealing a shining pearl.
Elara’s hands trembled. She recognized the woman. She looked just like... her. She stared at the carvings, a deep sadness washing over her. This wasn’t just a legend. It was history.
And then, she saw it.
In the deepest part of the cave, there was a pool of water. The water was an impossible, brilliant blue, and it glowed with a soft, inner light. Hanging from a rock above the pool, on a chain of coral, was a pearl. It was perfect and round, and it pulsed with a gentle, rhythmic light, like a heartbeat.
As Elara stared at the beautiful pearl, she felt a connection so strong it took her breath away. It was as if the pearl was calling out to her very soul.
The whisper wasn’t a whisper anymore. It was a gentle, clear voice that seemed to come from the pearl itself.
“You have come, child. At last. A heart as true as the one he broke. Long have I waited…”
Elara reached out her hand to touch the pearl. The moment her fingers brushed its smooth surface, a thousand images flooded her mind. She saw Lyra, the Keeper, standing in her beautiful city. She saw her falling in love with a man who betrayed her. She saw the city sink into the sea. She saw Lyra’s heart break.
And then she saw Caelan. In her vision, she saw him looking at the very same pearl, his eyes gleaming with greed. She saw him on the day she had almost drowned, and he had saved her. But the vision was different. She saw him looking at her, and she saw him thinking, “This is her. The one from the legend. She will lead me to it. She must.”
It all came crashing down.
It wasn’t fate that had brought Caelan to her village. It was a plan. He hadn’t been trying to save her when she was drowning. He had been testing her, trying to see if the ocean would protect her, to prove she was the one from the prophecy. And it had.
He never loved her.
He had used her. Just like Kael had used Lyra, a thousand years ago. He had found her, made her fall in love with him, just to find the pearl—the Heart of the Deep. His ancestor’s curse had made his family seek the Heart, and Caelan’s love for her was all a lie to find it.
And Elara, poor, foolish Elara, had led him right to it.
Tears streamed down her face. Her chest felt like it was being crushed. The love she felt was so deep, so real. And it was all a beautiful, heartbreaking lie.
The voice of Lyra, the guardian spirit, echoed in her mind.
“He is not the man you thought. He is the shadow of the one who betrayed me. But you, Elara, are my hope. You carry my soul. Do not let him have the Heart. Its power must be returned to the sea, to me, so my city can rise again and my heart can heal. Only then will the cycle end.”
Elara stumbled back from the pool. She couldn’t breathe. She had to get away. She had to think.
She ran from the cave and back to the palace, her mind a mess of pain and confusion. She loved Caelan. She hated Caelan. He was the villain of her story. He was the reason for her pain.
