Lt. Badoo quickly let go of his pistol, placing it gently on the ground. Then he turned to his frightened fiancé and assured her the worse was over.
“Honey, it’s over. The police are here”.
Helen, who was still hiding behind the refrigerator nodded and got out. Then she got up and buried herself in the arms of her boyfriend, crying.
Sergeant Kwesi Brown was giving what he said was his third and final ultimatum to those in the house when Lt. Badoo and his girlfriend emerged with their hands in the air. The soldier had told the nurse to keep her hands up above her head, assuring her that everything will be all right.
Six police officers quickly aimed their guns at the couple as they walked towards the gate. They ordered Lt. Badoo and Helen to halt and still keep their hands in the air. Then two police personnel, one of them a woman, walked to them and frisked them.
“They are clean sir,” one of the police officers who frisked the pair said.
Who are you too and what are you doing here?” Sgt. Kwesi Brown asked the two.
“I am Lt. Badoo of Military Intelligence and this is my fiancée, Helen. She lives here and I came to visit her when gunmen suddenly attacked us. I had a gun on me so I shot back at them and I believe I killed two of them,” Lt. Badoo said. “I have my I.D. in my pocket,” he added.
The soldier giving the instruction to produce the ID card, which he readily did, Sgt. Brown inspected it and then gave it back to him. Then he ordered his men to lower their guns. Soon, six men from the homicide division of the police service arrived. They had an ambulance with them. They carried the bodies of Tiger and Sphinx away on stretchers and placed them in the ambulance. With the permission of the police, Lt. Badoo phoned Lt. Clottey to tell him what had happened in his absence. Lt. Clottey nearly dropped the phone when he heard of what had happened.
He held on to the phone, listening with rapt attention as his colleague, Lt. Badoo narrated to him what had taken place in his home.
Vice-President Gertrude Mensah, standing by, saw Lt. Clottey’s countenance changed. She suspected immediately that it was bad news; something had gone wrong.
“Charlie, are you sure my sister is alright?” Lt. Clottey asked his colleague.
“She is, Victor. She is right here. Hold on and talk to her” Lt. Badoo said.
Presently, Helen came on the line. Her voice trembled as she spoke. Satisfied that his sister was alright, Lt. Clottey told Lt. Badoo to take her out of the house immediately because the gun men may return.
“Victor, is there something you know about what just happened in your house that I am not aware of?” Lt. Badoo asked. With his intelligence background, he sensed from his colleague’s tone that the incident had not really come as a surprise to him.
“Charlie, hmmm, I believe the shooting is connected to a case I am handling now. I surely was the target of those gunmen and they will not rest until they get me because I have information, which implicates them. I was expecting them to come after me but I did not expect them to act so soon. You were God sent. Without you, my sister would have been dead by now. Please leave the house immediately with her.”
