After prevailing on his colleague to take his sister, Helen, to a safer place, Lt. Clottey briefed the Vice-President about what had taken place in his house.
“My God, these people are so blood thirsty. They are so ruthless and heartless. I am glad two are dead. What is this? Lieutenant, I am scared. I fear for my life and that of my child, ” the Vice-President said.
Lt. Clottey told the Vice-President he understood her fears. He suggested to her that she get someone to take her child away to where he would be safe within the country. The Vice-President nodded and said she would do that as soon as she got back home.
“I am worried about Gloria too, I mean your cleaner”, the soldier said. “If they have gone in search of me so quickly obviously to finish me, it means she told them about what took place. She made them aware that apart from you, I also know about the plot to assassinate you. That also means she is no longer going to be serving as our informant. Her own life may be in danger”
The Vice-President and the soldier decided to call Gloria. However, their respective calls went through but no answer. Lt. Clottey gave up after his sixth attempt.
“Hmmm” he signed. “I fear for her life. She is probably dead by now, murdered by the very people who contracted her to assassinate you.”
Prime Minister Gertrude Mensah did not know what to feel about her cleaner. She no longer had any sympathy for Gloria after she attempted to assassinate her through poisoning. She wondered how much they offered her to get her to attempt the dastardly act. The Prime Minister would never know Rex Yamoah who used her love for him and his promise to marry her as bait tricked Gloria into the plot.
Just then, the forensic team Lt. Clottey called the headquarters of his unit (MI) for arrival procedures. They were three men and two women. Quickly, he briefed them about the smearing of the Vice President’s drawer handles with polonium-120; they were to disinfect the whole room and make it safer to use. The Vice-President said she wanted the drawers removed from the office altogether. Lt. Clottey ordered the forensic team to first disinfect the office, particularly the drawer handles before removing the drawers from the office.
“I need to go home now and take a bath. Moreover, I think it is time to brief the President. That the Deputy Head of National Security is involved in the attempt to assassinate me is serious. It means even the President himself is not safe. However, I cannot go home alone, Lieutenant. I don’t know what the gang may plan after this abortive attempt, especially as you said they have Plan B and C if plan A fails”, she said.
Lt. Clottey said he did not mind taking her home. After giving further orders to the forensic team, especially, on the need to keep the matter private until further notice, he accompanied the Vice-President to where she had parked her car. She would drive while he sat by her. She opened the door of the car and sat down. He got in besides her. Quickly, she inserted the key into the ignition.
“Stop, Don’t turn the key!” Lt. Clottey suddenly said. It was an order. The Vice-President froze. Her hand held the key; a twist of hand and she would be revving the engine.
What is it, Lieutenant?” she asked.
“Your Excellency, I have the feeling that if you turn the key, we would be blown into pieces. It may just be my intuition but please don’t turn the key” the Lieutenant said, placing her hand over that of the Vice President’s. Confused, the Vice-President let go of the key. She could see that the soldier was sweating.
“What is it, Lieutenant?” she asked.
“Before I explain, please let us get out of the car,” Lt. Clottey said, opening the side of his door and getting out. The Vice-President got out too and came round to the soldier who was still sweating.
