He stepped on the accelerator pedal of the vehicle; aware that time was not on their side. He has to get her back to her residence on time so she could have enough time to have her bath and dress up before they make the long way back to the airport. Moreover, because of the issues that took place early that morning, she did not have escorts that would pave the way for them to hasten their movement.
They were just another vehicle among the thousands on the streets of the capital that morning. The weather was hot as the sun frowned fiercely. Gertrude Mensah did not notice that every now and then, Lt. Clottey would glance intently at his rear view mirror.
“Your appointment takes immediate effect,” the Acting President suddenly said.
“Pardon, Madam?” he asked, surprised.
“I said your appointment as my ADC takes immediate effect, Lieutenant. I am not going to allow you to leave my side. I cannot trust anybody around me as I trust you. I am going to call Ian to tell him about your appointment.
“Yes Madam,” he responded. Then he made a statement that made the Acting President’s blood freeze.
“I think we are being followed, Madam,” he said, almost in a whisper. Gertrude Mensah immediately sat up and stared into the rear view mirror but could not determine which vehicle or vehicles were following them.
“There are two vehicles following us. Madam, please fasten your seat belts. I am going to shake them off” he said.
Lt. Clottey had seen both vehicles at the premises of the 37Military Hospital. At the time, their presence did not ring any alarm bell. He did not even pay attention to them. They were just among the many vehicles at the parking lot of the hospital. Now his security and intelligence training made him remember seeing both vehicles at the Military hospital five minutes after they left the hospital when he spotted them in his mirror. He still made nothing of the two vehicles initially but when they continued behind him with a few cars between them after ten minutes, he began to suspect they were following him and his boss; he was not an intelligence officer for nothing.
“This time, they would not have their way,” the Acting President said, shaking with rage as she reached for her phone. Quickly, she phoned the National Security Coordinator, Ian Sackey. The phone kept ringing but no answer.
“What is wrong with him? Why won’t he pick my call?” she asked, getting agitated as Lt. Clottey sent their car surging forward, bracing himself for any eventuality.
………………………………………………………………………………
Ian Sackey, the National Security Coordinator was in no position to pick the call of the Acting Vice-President because he was dead. He was lying on a stretcher at the Military Hospital.
After taking leave of Gertrude Mensah at the hospital, he walked to his car, a Toyota V8 and waited for the new Head of State to leave. A few seconds later, he saw her and Lt. Clottey walk up to the car they had come to the hospital in. Then they drove out of the hospital. He waited for about two minutes before driving out of the parking lot himself. At the main gate of the hospital, he turned right and joined the main road, heading towards the Ako Adjei Interchange.
He picked his phone and put in a call to Kwame Kusi, the Security Operative who had ordered to arrest Rex Yamoah.
“Have you arrested the scoundrel?” he asked
“No sir. They could not find his location. I have deployed the boys on the ground. They are looking for him everywhere. I am sure in the next one hour they will bring him in,” Kwame Kusi said.
