CHAPTER 57
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

Lt. Clottey stopped him mid-sentence, punching him on the jaw. The doctor reeled back. The Acting President was stunned by what the soldier had done. She could not tell why he did that.
The soldier sprung from his bed, wincing but lashing out at the doctor. His fist caught him on the side of the head. The doctor staggered and then lunged at Lt. Clottey with the hypodermic needle. The soldier ducked, avoiding the needle. Then he kicked the doctor very hard in the groin, so hard that his foot hurt. The doctor winced and crumbled to the floor.
The Vice-President started screaming. She made for the door, fumbled with the handle, turned it and opened the door. Those outside were surprised to see her rush out screaming.
“Something is happening in there,” she cried out, pointing to the room. Lt. Badoo who had been standing on the corridor with Helen dashed into the room only to find Lt. Clottey and the doctor who just passed by them and entered Lt. Clottey’s room, in a fierce struggle. The doctor, it seemed, was trying to stick the hypodermic needle into Lt. Clottey’s body; the soldier was resisting. Without much ado, Lt. Badoo went to the aid of his colleague. He grabbed the doctor’s hand which was wielding the syringe, twisted it till it dropped from his hand. Then he kicked him hard in the chest. The doctor screamed out in pain as he reeled and fell backwards, hitting his head against the floor. Then he began to cough out blood.
“Victor, what is happening?” Lt. Badoo asked his colleague.
“He is a fake. I am sure he is wearing a mask. Look at the complexion of his face. Then look at that of his hand” Lt. Clottey replied amidst gasps. One look at the doctor and Lt. Badoo saw his colleague’s point. Immediately, he whisked out his pistol and aimed it at the doctor.
“Pull that mask off now!” he ordered. The doctor did not stir.
“Give me the gun and then pull the mask off,” Lt. Clottey said. He was bleeding from the wound on his shoulder. Lt. Badoo gave the gun to him and went to kneel by the doctor who was still lying supine on the floor. Then grabbing hold of the skin of his face, began to pull it.
The skin stretched and began to peel away. It was indeed a fake. The doctor was wearing a mask alright. Lt. Badoo ripped all of it off, leaving the face unmasked – it was the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Rex Yamoah!
The two soldiers stared in disbelief at the Deputy National Security Coordinator. However, only Lt. Clottey knew the man they were staring at was behind the assassination attempts on the Acting President as well as the gun attack on his East Legon home. Lt. Badoo was unaware of these so he was even more shocked that the fake doctor who had just attempted to inject poison into his colleague was none other than the Deputy National Security Coordinator.
“Sir!” he exclaimed, staring with disbelief at the Deputy Security capo. Lt. Clottey quickly cleared the air for his colleague.
“Kweku, he is the one behind the attempts on the Vice President’s life and the attack on you in my house” Lt. Clottey revealed. His colleague’s jaw dropped in surprise. By then, people, including doctors and nurses had begun trooping into the ward. Helen had also come in. The Acting President, though badly shaken, was also back in the room. She was shocked to find the Deputy National Coordinator in the room, subdued.
“You!” she exclaimed. So you were the one who entered this room pretending to be a doctor. Rex! What have I done to you that you want me dead at all cost! You have made my life a living hell the past forty-eight hours. You have killed your boss and so many other people just so you can assassinate me! And I thought you were my friend!” Gertrude Mensah said in anguish.
Rex Yamoah was still on the floor, bleeding. Lt. Badoo quickly put in a call to Brigadier Addy, informing him about what had happened. The shocked MI boss said he was sending a team immediately to come for the Deputy Security Capo. About five minutes later, eight heavily armed military men arrived to take away Rex Yamoah. Because he could not stand on his feet let alone walk, he was hulled into a wheel-chair provided by the hospital and wheeled to one of the two military jeeps that the soldiers had come in.
