He stood up when he saw the three soldiers. They stared back at him. Then Brigadier Addy told the two Lieutenants that he called them to come over because Rex had decided the game was over and had started singing like a canary.
“I decided since you are at the heart of what I heard is an assassination plot against the Vice-President, you should be here to hear it all. So, I told him to wait for you to be here then he can say what he wants to say”, Brigadier Addy said.
The Deputy National Security had decided the game was over after Kruger dived from that floor of the building to death about an hour earlier just after they had been released and set free by Brigadier Addy on the orders of the Army Commander. The sight of Kruger’s mangled body as it lay on the floor far below took every steam out of Rex Yamoah and made him decide the game was over for him. He was no longer going to try to outwit the system. He no longer had the energy to do that. And infuriated at the Speaker for not doing enough to get them out which invariably led Kruger to commit suicide, he was going to spill the beans.
Earlier the evening of the previous day, after receiving the call from Major-General Omari Duah directing him to release Rex and Kruger immediately, and that a squad from the Special Forces Unit was on the way to take the two back to their respective homes, Brigadier Noah Addy immediately had the two brought to his office. He apologized to them for detaining them. He was particularly apologetic to Rex because they were friends, having worked together on several sensitive security issues. He then told Rex the order for their release had come from the Army Commander who had found that they were the ones rather trying to thwart an attempt to take power by force from President Stephen Marfo.
Both men were pleasantly surprised at their release. However, when Brigadier Addy phoned Sgt, Isaac Adodi, head of the Special Forces squad which was on its way to the headquarters of MI to find out where he and his squad had reached, the sergeant told him they were not very close (to the MI’s headquarters) because the rain had slowed them down. He however promised they would arrive soon. Brigadier Addy then directed that Rex and Kruger be taken to the Senior Officers’ rest room also on that floor of the building to wait for Sgt. Adodi and his men.
This directive was complied with. The two were taken to the rest room and served tea. Rex Yamoah took a sip and then smiling at Kruger, said he was sure the Speaker was behind the order from the Army Commander.
“I knew he would never abandon us to our fate. He’s a great guy. I have worked for him for some time now and he has never failed me”, he added as he took another sip. Kruger, however, seemed not to share Rex’s enthusiasm.
“I don’t feel comfortable sitting here waiting. Once we have been released, let us make our move, sir. Let us leave the premises immediately” he opined.
“In this weather? How would we get home? The army commander must have very good reasons for wanting us to be taken home by soldiers from the Special Forces unit. Man, we are safe. Relax and enjoy your tea, okay. The weather is very cold. A cup of hot tea would do your system a lot of good”, Rex Yamoah replied.
“I don’t like it here, sir. Until we leave here, I would not consider us as being free”, Kruger said.
“I say relax, Kruger. The Chairman (referring to the Speaker) has everything under control”, Rex Yamoah said. Reluctantly, Kruger sat back in his chair but did not touch the tea he had been served.
He was jittery. Just a couple of hours ago, he came to the end of the road when he was arrested at the airport by members of the Rapid Response squad of the army. Then by a stroke of luck, he has just been released. He felt it was foolhardy for him after this release to still be on the premises of MI. What if it is discovered that they were in fact the ones who had plotted to assassinate the Vice-President and had tried but failed several times? His thoughts went to Rt, Hon. Kwesi Adu-Tutu. The thought of the Speaker made him cringe. If he, Kruger, was a heartless character, then the Speaker was a man without a soul.
