CHAPTER 85
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

He remembered how he (the Speaker) hired him to murder his wife. He even had a plan he wanted Kruger to follow; he was to ram a tipper truck into her car while she was on her way home. She always used a particular root and the Speaker said it is often deserted hence a good place to carry out the heinous act. The assignment had rattled Kruger; he had been hired to undertake several clandestine operations which he did. A couple involved murder which he carried out but never had he been hired by any man to kill his wife.
He had wanted to refuse the job but two things made him change his mind. The first was that the money he would earn from it was huge. The second was that he felt if he refuses, the Speaker would hire somebody to kill him to shut him up. So he took the job, collected part payment and then executed it to the latter.
It was a day he’ll never forget. It was a very sunny afternoon. The Speaker’s wife was heading home and had reached the isolated part of the road when Kruger, driving a stolen tipper truck at full speed, rammed into the driver’s side of the car, sending it summersaulting. He then got out, dashed to the car which had landed on its back, pried open the fuel tank and threw a lighted match stick into it. The car exploded. But for the fact that he dived for cover less than a second before the explosion, he would have been torched by the fire. The Speaker’s wife, trapped behind the steer and badly injured, had no chance of surviving the fire. She got consumed by the inferno. Kruger ran back to his truck and drove away. When he was sure he was nowhere near the accident scene, he phoned the Speaker and told him he had completed the assignment.
“Good. I would see you later”, was all that the Speaker said in response. He would never find out why he wanted her dead. Rt. Hon Kwesi Adu-Tutu began psyching himself up to pretend to be shocked and horrified when he was informed about his wife’s death. Twenty minutes after Kruger called him, he received a call from the Administrator of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital who informed him about his wife’s death. He made sure the Majority and Minority leaders were with him when the call came. He broke down into tears immediately when he received the news. The Majority and Minority Leaders tried their best to console him. Soon, the tragedy was all over in the news. Nobody suspected it was murder; the police said Comfort Adu-Tutu died as a result of the accident she had.
That evening, the Speaker called his two children in London and broke the news to them. He prevailed on them not to come for the funeral because he did not want them to see their mother’s charred body. In consultation with his wife’s family, the remains of Comfort Adu-Tutu were buried a week after her death. Three days later, he phoned Kruger, met him at the La Pleasure beach and paid him the remainder of the money for the ‘job’ he had done. He added a generous amount as bonus for good work done but warned him against revealing to anybody what he had done unless he wanted to be murdered as he murdered his wife.
Now, sitting in the rest room of the MI, he wondered how he came to be working for a soulless man like the Speaker of Parliament. He conceded it was the allure of money that made him kill Comfort Adu-Tutu and again, led him to decide to be part of the gang that plotted the assassination of the Vice-President. Come to think about it, he would not be surprised if the Speaker had ordered them released just to ensure they avoid interrogation so there’ll be no chance he would be implicated in the assassination plot attempt and that his plans to have them, especially he, Kruger, killed to shut them up forever. If a man can have his own wife murdered, having others who were not related to him by any means murdered is child’s play to him.
Kruger was still buried in thought when a soldier came to inform them the Special Forces Squad had arrived to take them home. They got up and left the restroom.
“You see it was good we waited. I told you to relax. I know how these things work. The chairman is in full control so there is no cause for alarm”, Rex Yamoah said, smiling. He had his own plans to leave the country that very night. He would make his way into Togo before day breaks and from there, leave for Europe. If the Speaker who he believed was now pulling the strings succeeds in becoming President, he would come back to Ghana and take over as the substantive National Security Coordinator.
