CHAPTER 86
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

They were brought back to Brigadier Addy’s office. Sgt Adodi and three of his men were with him. They had finally arrived at MI after a tortuous journey through the brutal rain. The Sergeant ordered three of his men to come up with him for Rex and Kruger. The rest were to wait downstairs.
Rex Yamoah and Sgt. Adodi needed no introduction to each other. They knew each other very well. As Deputy National Security Coordinator, Rex had deployed Sgt. Adodi led several security operations including the recent search for two suspected terrorists along the Ghana-Cote D’Ivoire border. So they were not strangers to each other.
Before they left, Brigadier Noah Addy once again apologized to Rex Yamoah in particular for detaining him.
“Don’t let it worry you, Noah. You were only doing your duty. I knew the truth would be out so I wasn’t worried. But you would have to buy me a drink this coming weekend” he said, jokingly. Everyone in the room laughed over the joke. Then Sgt. Adodi and his men left the Brigadier’s office with Rex and Kruger. It was about two minutes after they left that the Army Commander phoned Brigadier Addy and told him not to release the two as he had earlier instructed.
A chill immediately ran down Brigadier Addy’s spine. He told the Army Commander based on his earlier instructions, he had released the duo. He heard the Major-General exclaim in pain. Immediately, he put the phone down and ran out of his office to see if he could stop Rex and Kruger from leaving the premises, that is if they had not left already.
Sgt Adodi, his three men, Rex and Kruger were about to take the lift and head downstairs when Brigadier Addy burst out of his office screaming for them to stop. All six men whirled around to face him.
“Sergeant! Stop! The two men are not to be released!” he barked out as he ran towards them. Kruger reacted immediately, guessing rightly that a new order had come for them not to be released. The truth, obviously, had been re-established. He decided it would be a mistake to try escaping in the lift because soldiers downstairs would be called to wait for the lift on any of the floors and apprehend him the moment he gets out. He dashed towards the nearest door of one of the offices, opened it and sprinted through the office towards the glass windows. He was not going to allow himself to be caught alive. Sgt Adodi and his men, momentarily stunned into inaction, dashed after him and were about to shoot when Kruger flung himself through the glass window. He immediately found himself dangling in mid-air and then plunging down with speed.
The soldiers and Rex Yamoah reached the window and could only stare in horror as Kruger continued downwards. He knew he was about to die. Moments before he hit the ground, his thoughts momentarily went to his three children who were living with his mother. ….then he felt a sharp pain pierce through his body; he had crashed on to the marbled floor. Then he breathed for the last time, dying almost instantly with his backbone breaking at three different places and the back of his head bursting open. Blood oozed out like a fountain. The rain, oblivious about what had happened, continued to fall very hard. It mercilessly fell on the body, washing the blood away into the nearby gutter. From the 8th floor where they were, looking down, Sgt. Adodi, his three men and Rex Yamoah looked on with shock. The Deputy National Security Coordinator suddenly felt weak at the knees. He sank to his knees, his will to escape suddenly deserting him. Brigadier Addy came in and seeing the others at the window, rushed there. Then looking down, he saw what they were staring at; Kruger’s mangled body far down below. He was not moved. He had seen worse than this several times. He turned to some of his men who had also come in and ordered Rex Yamoah to be hurled up and returned to the guardroom. Then he phoned Major-General Omari Duah and told him what had happened.
