CHAPTER 87
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

The Major-General was relieved. He had joined the search in the rain for the Speaker of Parliament while still wondering how he was going to explain his ordering of the release of Rex and Kruger. So the call from Brigadier Addy announcing the re-arrest of Rex and the death of Kruger as he tried to escape came as a big relief to him.
“Thank you so much, Noah. Thank you. I had a call from the President himself who ordered that the two should not be released because they had in fact plotted to and tried several times to assassinate his Vice. If Sgt. Adodi is with you, let me talk to him”, the Major-General said. Brigadier Addy handed over the phone to the Sergeant. The Army Commander told him to leave Rex in the custody of Brigadier Noah and join the rest of them to search for the Speaker.
“Yes Sir!” Sgt. Adodi responded. Then handing over the phone back to Brigadier Addy, saluted him and sought permission to leave. Permission was granted.
Rex Yamoah soon found himself back in the guardroom. Left alone, he buried his face in his palms and began to sob. Then he began to feel responsible for his death; Kruger had urged that they leave as soon as they were released. If he had listened to him and not prevailed on him for them to wait for the Special Forces, Kruger would have been alive.
This was not the outcome he had envisaged when he set about plotting the assassination of the Vice-President. He had laid out three meticulous plans to ensure the Vice-President would be assassinated no matter the obstacles. His choosing of Gloria to poison her with Polonium 210 had been a perfect plan. But everything began to crumble from the day his boys, that is Kruger, Sphinx and Tiger went blabbing at the beach in the dead of the night only to find out that somebody had eavesdropped on their conversation and had thus become privy to the plot. That had obviously brought Lt. Clottey into the picture and resulted in one plot after the other to assassinate the Vice-President failing. What he could not understand was why Phan Xuan, the Vietnamese sharpshooter and professional assassin he had brought into the country at a huge cost, failed to assassinate the Vice-President at the airport. He could not tell what had happened though Kruger had told him just a few minutes ago he was sure Phan Xuan’s failure to assassinate the Vice-President had something to do with Lt. Clottey.
Kruger told him the circumstances under which he encountered the Lieutenant at the airport. Both men could therefore not tell why Phan Xuan did not gun down the Vice-President. They could also not tell where he was. They had planned to immediately go look for him after their release. Now, that would never be.
As he analysed all that had happened so far, he began to be angry with the Speaker of Parliament. He expected him to use his influence to get them released when things went wrong and they were arrested. That was the assurance he gave him before they started the whole ‘project’. But as far as he was concerned, their re-arrest after their release was an indication he had not done enough to protect them. It was at this point he decided to sing, to tell it all and damn the consequences; he was not going to save the Speaker’s neck. If he has abandoned them to their fate, they would sink with him.
About an hour after his re-arrest, Brigadier Addy came to the guardroom to check on him. It was there he decided to seize the opportunity to explain why they plotted to assassinate the Vice-President and name who was behind it. But the Brigadier, after realizing what he had decided to do, told him to wait while he gets Lt. Clottey to come listen to him, thus his call to the Lieutenant and his insistence he comes immediately to the office.
Now, with Lt. Clottey in together with Lt. Badoo, Brigadier Addy asked Rex if he still wanted to get everything off his chest. The Deputy National Security Coordinator nodded. Then taking a deep breath, he began to spill the beans.
