He told them about the relationship that had existed between him and Rt. Hon. Kwesi Adu -Tutu. Then he went on about why Adu-Tutu wanted the Vice-President assassinated and sought his assistance. He explained that his motivation for agreeing to assist him was the position of National Security Coordinator he promised him.
The Deputy National Security Coordinator then told them about Kruger, how he had worked for him for years and for which reason he recruited him to be part of the plot. He said Kruger brought Sphinx and Tiger on board.
The three soldiers in the room were quiet. None made any attempt to interrupt Rex Yamoah. He went on, telling them he recruited Cpl. Attinka and then Phan Xuan as part of plan B and C if plan A fails.
“My main arsenal was Gloria, the Vice-President’s cleaner. She was the best person to use in assassinating the Vice-President through poisoning so I befriended her, made her fall in love with me. I got her by promising to marry her. Then I lied to her that the President and other high ups have decided the Vice-President must be assassinated and she has been chosen to do it. She believed it because it was coming from a man she had fallen in love with. However, you know the rest of the story. Lieutenant here caught her in the act”, Rex said.
“Where is Gloria?” Lt. Clottey asked.
“Dead”, Rex replied. “Kruger killed her after you let her go because she exposed us. She confessed to Kruger you caught her and during interrogation, she told you everything about the plot. Kruger decided she must be killed and did it”
This news did not come as a shock to Lt. Clottey. He wished he had not let her go after catching her in the act but he knew it was the best action he took at that time under the circumstances. If she had been hard enough not to crumble under pressure and not told Kruger she was caught in the act, she might still have been alive.
“I don’t know what happened at the airport. Phan Xuan was supposed to assassinate the Vice-President there. Somehow, he did not. I don’t know where he is at the moment” Rex said.
“He is dead. I found and shot him dead just as he was about to shoot the Vice-President from his hideout”, Lt. Clottey told the security capo. Rex Yamoah sighed. He realized every aspect of their plot had failed.
“Who killed Ian Sackey?” Lt. Clottey asked.
“ Phan Xuan”, the security capo replied.
“You have a lot of blood, innocent blood, on your hands”, Lt. Clottey opined. Rex Yamoah bowed his head in admission.
“The blood of the fisher-folks your people killed, the policemen at the James Town police station, the inmates of the cell as the same police station and Ian Sackey are all on your hands. You did all this just because you wanted to be National Security Coordinator. Are you that power hungry?” Lt. Clottey asked.
Rex did not say anything.
“And you tried to add me to your victims. You tried to kill me too with poison” the soldier said.
“I am sorry. You had thwarted all our efforts so I decided you had to die. Once you were eliminated, we can achieve our aim. Unfortunately, with Tiger, Sphinx, Gloria and Cpl. Attinka died, Kruger in the grips of MI and Derek and Phan Xuan nowhere to be found, I had to do it myself.”, the security capo confessed.
“I see. Who is Derek?” Lt. Clottey asked. The Security capo hesitated.
“If you want to come clean, come clean. Don’t hold any information back. This may be the only way you could purge your soul and wash some of the blood of the innocent you killed off your hands”, Lt. Badoo urged the security capo when he noticed he was hesitating. Rex took a deep breath and then explained who Derek is.
“He was part of the plot. He is a driver at National Security. He is my boy. I roped him into the plot. He was the one who was driving the second vehicle which went after you and Madam Vice-President after you left the hospital” Rex said. Implicating Derek was a very difficult thing for him because he was one of his favourites at National Security.
“I guess you know where he lives. You would have to take us there right now”, Lt. Clottey said.
Brigadier went to look at the time. His wrist watch indicated it was 2:18 a.m.
“I guess this is going to be a long night”, he said “… but let’s do it.”
Rex was led out of the guardroom and handcuffed. Lt Badooo went downstairs to assemble some of the boys on duty. Ten minutes later, three jeeps loaded with well-armed soldiers left MI and headed for Nima. Also in the vehicles were Brigadier Addy, Lt. Clottey and Lt. Badooo.
The rain continued with brute intensity, caring less about the assignment the soldiers were carrying out. Fifteen minutes later, they arrived at Nima. There whole place was flooded. However, Rex seemed to know his way about. Seated in the lead vehicle, he directed the driver down an alley till they came to a building. It was a compound house.
“He lives there”, Rex Yamoah said, pointing to a blue door. Brigadier Addy nodded and got down. The soldiers in the other vehicles all got down and came to him. Everyone except Rex Yamoah was in a rain coat.
Brigadier Addy pointed out Derek’s room to them and ordered them to go bring him out.
The soldiers moved stealthily in the rain and took positions around the house. Some positioned themselves just behind the only window of Derek’s room. Then Lt. Badoo led Rex Yamoah to the door. When they got there, the security capo knocked.
