THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENTChapter 91 of 95
CHAPTER 91
THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE THE VICE PRESIDENT

Kwesi Adu-Tutu was filthily wealthy with properties in New York, London, Zurich and Johannesburg. He had investments in two companies in Asia and one in Germany. He had a holiday resort in Bermuda and a ranch in Brazil. His net worth as at the end of the previous year was US$ 930 million but not even his late wife nor his children knew the extent of his wealth though they knew he was wealthy. He felt depressed thinking of all that he had acquired and knowing that from that day onwards, he would never have access to any of them again ; he would be sentenced to death and executed soon; dead men don’t need properties or money.
“Soon, after the extent of my crimes are known, the state would seize my properties and bank accounts they know of. The foreign banks where I have some of my monies would keep silent over theirs and steal them. People who did not toil for even a cedi or a dollar for me are going to take over my money and enjoy it”, he mused, bitterly. For the first time, tears began to form in his eyes.
“My chest! I can feel pains in my chest”, he suddenly let out. His claim angered the soldiers in the vehicle. One of them told him to shut up.
“I am a good man to come and give you a dirty slap. Because of you, we have not slept the whole night. We have been in this bitter weather, looking for you. Some of our colleagues have gotten injured in the process. Yet you have the guts to complain about chest pains! Idiot! Shurrup!” the soldier thundered.
Meanwhile, Derek was still crying and blaming Rex for the situation he was in but the Security capo no longer made any attempt to explain the situation as he saw it to him. As far as he was concerned, they had come to the end of the road. The plot to assassinate the Vice-President had ended up a fiasco and in hindsight, was the biggest mistake of his life. If the clock of time was to be reversed, he would decline any invitation from the Speaker to help assassinate the Vice-President. Now, he knew only one fate awaited him; death by firing squad. He was going to be prosecuted and there was no way he would not be found guilty of any of the charges that would be preferred against him, especially murder and attempting to murder. He had decided to plead guilty to any charge preferred in court by the state against him because being the henchman of Rt. Hon. Kwesi Adu-Tutu, he was as guilty as sin of the murder of all the people Kruger, Tiger, Sphinx and Phan Xuan killed. He planned not to take a lawyer; he would tell the judge it is a waste of time. The only thing that was irritating to him was Derek’s lamentations as he blamed him for his arrest.
The convoy of three military jeeps finally arrived at the offices of MI and parked. The soldiers disembarked and brought out Adu-Tutu, Rex and Derek. The three were then immediately spirited to the 8th Floor and then to the two guardrooms. While the Speaker and Derek were locked up in one, Rex was locked up in another.
“What a night,” Brigadier Noah Addy said as he led Lt. Clottey and Lt. Badoo back to his office. Once there, he placed a call to Major-General Omari Duah and told him about the arrest of the Speaker of Parliament and Derek.
“Wow! Excellent! This is the best news I have had since I was born!” the Brigadier heard the Major-General scream out in ecstasy. Omari-Duah, thrilled by the news, immediately called off the search for the Speaker, deciding to go immediately to the offices of the MI to see things for himself. He had planned to end his marriage with his wife for locking him up in his room at a crucial moment when duty called. Her locking him up after the situation he found himself in was for him worse than she murdering him; his wife might as well have killed him at the time because he had ordered released persons who had plotted to assassinate the Vice-President, making him an accessory to crime. But, luck had been on his side; Rex and Kruger had been re-arrested based on his second call. And now, the Speaker of parliament who the President ordered him to arrest because he was the key man behind the assassination plot had been arrested. So happy was he that he decided to forgive his wife.
