THE MAN WHO CAME WITH THE MID NIGHT RAIN

Synopsis

Elena Vale, an architectural conservator who specializes in historic restorations, arrives at Blackmere Houseโ€”a brooding, dilapidated estate on the bank of a dark lake. Inherited from her estranged grandmother, Adelaide, the house triggers a disturbing sense of dรฉjร  vu. Though Elena has not visited since she was eight years old, she finds herself possessing unnerving, precise instincts about the mansion's layout, including an eerie foreknowledge of a hidden chapel and a missing key.

Upon arrival, she is met by Elias Mercer, a hostile and cryptic caretaker who drops uneasy hints about Adelaide's secrets and warns Elena to ignore any strange occurrences outside at night. Elena tries to brush off her growing unease with professional logic, but the house quickly defies explanation:

In her bedroom, she discovers a wardrobe containing a set of antique dresses from the turn of the centuryโ€”one of which bears the initials "C.V." and brings to mind the name Clara, a relative she has no recollection of knowing.

Following mysterious knocking sounds, Elena uncovers a hidden private chapel behind a statue of Saint Agnes, where a lingering supernatural presence lights and extinguishes altar candles without explanation.

Outside her window, a mysterious figure stands by the lake, and a large male handprint briefly appears on her second-story glass before vanishing finger by finger.

The evening culminates when Elena discovers a fresh note left on the chapel altar in her late grandmotherโ€™s handwriting. The note warns: "If the rain begins at midnight, do not open the bedroom window." Beneath Adelaide's warning, a second, darker hand has added a chilling response: "She will open it. She always does."

As the chapter ends, rhythmic tapping echoes from her bedroom window, and a sound like a long, wet breath rises from the lakeโ€”leaving Elena trapped between her skeptical mind and an unfolding gothic nightmare.
